Beginner

Starting Point: Where you are

  • Can swim freestyle up and down a 25 yard pool.
  • Can swim in open water Lake, Ocean, Sea)

Things to Learn: What to learn

  • Learn a distance stroke Train in open water (ocean, lake etc.)
  • Do continuous laps in a pool without stopping.
  • Learn heads up freesyle.
  • Learn general open water terminology in the Glossary.
  • Do a sprint open water race Learn Backstroke.

To the Next Level: How to move up

  • Can swim freestyle 20 minutes straight without stopping.
  • Have done a sprint (short) open water race

Events/Activities: What you should do

  • Open water Swim teams.
  • Private Swim Lessons.
  • Masters teams.
  • Open water training groups

Intermediate

Starting Point: Where you are

  • Have done an open water race.
  • Can swim backstroke mastered.
  • Open Water Terminology in the Glossary

Things to Learn: What to learn

  • Use training equipment, kick board, pull buoy, training snorkle etc.
  • Swim in an open water longer than a mile (lake, beach, harbor)
  • Start to learn all four strokes (fly, Back, Breast, Free)
  • Train for 2 hours in each training session.
  • Learn proper nutrition/hydration for training and competing

To the Next Level: How to move up

  • Can swim all four strokes.
  • Can swim for 2 hour training session.
  • Have done atleast 10+ open water events.

Events/Activities: What you should do

  • Training group sessions.
  • Private swim lessons.
  • Swim Clinics and Camps.
  • Open Water events Summer league, YMCA, age group swimming, and masters meets

Advanced

Starting Point: Where you are

  • Can swim all four strokes with proper technique.
  • Have done multiple swimming events placing top 5 in your age group.
  • Can swim easily/effortlessly for long periods of time (2+ hours) daily

Things to Learn: What to learn

  • Learn advanced skills in all four strokes.
  • Learn how to swim with less resistance.
  • Swim in extreme Open Water Races in hostile conditions.
  • Swim every Olympic swimming event.
  • Teach all four strokes with advanced techniques.
  • Use ALL types of training equipment do a marathon swim

To the Next Level: How to move up

  • Become a World champ, Olympian and ambassador for your sport.

Events/Activities: What you should do

  • Advanced training group sessions.
  • Swim clinics Private swim Lessons Open Water: long/short races.
  • Open Water: marathon Swimming World Championships.
  • Open Water or pool events Summer league, YMCA, age group swimming, and masters meets.
