History of Standup Paddling
First used in the 1960s, Stand Up Paddling was a tool for surf instructors to remain in position to talk to their students and take photos. Since, Pro surfers have used it to position themselves for waves and for physical conditioning. SUPs provide an incredible workout. Between keeping your balance and paddling for locomotion the entire body gets a workout. Thirty years later the sport has developed into the fastest growing paddle sport in the world with over 1.25 million people Stand Up paddling in 2010 alone. More recently, River SUP has caught on as inland based surfers have found a new challenge which uses great skill amongst large rocks, in the rapids and standing waves. The sport now has its own magazine as of 2008 when Standup Journal hit the stands and now enjoys international success.
