Equipment and Gear
Before getting started, you will need to purchase some gear. Most importantly, you will need wrestling shoes and athletic clothing. For practices, most wrestlers wear shorts, t-shirts and wrestling shoes. While headgear is not required for most practices, it is required for all competitions. It is a good idea to wear headgear during practice as it protects your ears. If you wear braces you are required to wear a mouth guard covering top and bottom braces in practice and competition.
Competition Singlet (Freestyle and Greco-Roman require each competitor to have a Red and Blue Singlet)
For practice – Athletic shorts, tight-fitting t-shirt, athletic socks, wrestling shoes, supportive underwear, knee pads (optional), mouth guard, headgear
For competition – Singlet, athletic socks, wrestling shoes, supportive underwear, knee pads (optional), mouth guard, headgear.
Supportive underwear is a good idea for both practices and competition. Compression shorts or briefs are recommended.
